EGO 56V Battery Won't Charge in Cold Weather — Temperature Lock Explained

EGO 56V Arc Lithium batteries stop charging below 41°F (5°C). The charger shows a fault LED but this is normal BMS protection. Here is how to clear it.

Quick answer

Symptoms

An EGO 56V Power+ battery left in an unheated garage or shed through winter will almost certainly be below the charger's acceptance threshold when you go to use it in early spring. The same applies after a cold truck bed overnight.

On the CH5500 standard charger, a flashing red indicator means the pack is outside the acceptable temperature range. The charger does not distinguish between too cold and too hot in its LED output — both appear as a fault/temperature indicator. Per the CH5500 manual, the charging temperature range is 41°F–104°F (5°C–40°C).

On the CH7000 rapid charger, the dedicated status LED turns solid red when the pack temperature is outside the normal operating range (below approximately 37°F / 3°C operating floor, or above 135°F / 57°C). The four green capacity LEDs still show the pack's current charge level so you know where you stand.

Quick checks

  1. Check where the battery was stored. A pack left in an unheated space below 40°F overnight is almost certainly in temperature lock.
  2. Touch the pack. Noticeably cold to the touch confirms the cause.
  3. Read the charger LED correctly. On the CH5500, flashing red = temperature or fault. On the CH7000, look at the status LED — red means temp out of range.
  4. Bring the pack indoors and wait 20–30 minutes. If the fault indicator clears after warming, temperature was the cause.
  5. Check if the fault persists at room temperature. If the red indicator remains after 30 minutes indoors above 41°F, the battery may have a cell problem unrelated to temperature.

Step-by-step fix

  1. Remove the EGO 56V battery from the charger.
  2. Bring it to a heated indoor space above 41°F (5°C). Per the CH5500 manual, the charging range is 41°F–104°F (5°C–40°C).
  3. Allow the pack to warm to room temperature — typically 20–30 minutes for a 5.0Ah or 7.5Ah pack. Larger packs (10.0Ah, 12.0Ah) hold more thermal mass and may take longer.
  4. Reinsert the pack in the charger. Per the CH7000 manual, the charger resumes automatically once the pack returns to within its operating range. No button press or reset is needed.
  5. If charging still does not start after the pack has warmed:
    • Try a second EGO 56V pack on the same charger. If it charges normally, the first pack has a fault unrelated to temperature.
    • Try the first pack on a different EGO charger if one is available. Consistent faults on two chargers point to a bad pack.

If it still isn't working

If the fault indicator persists at room temperature, or the pack shows faults on two different EGO chargers, the battery may be at end-of-life or have a cell fault. EGO covers batteries under a 3-year limited warranty and tools under a 5-year limited warranty — both require registration at egopowerplus.com within the warranty period. Contact EGO customer support with the pack's model and serial number.

Packs that are swollen, leaking, or hot without recent use should not be placed in a charger. Set them outdoors on a non-flammable surface and contact a local hazardous waste facility or a Call2Recycle drop-off location.

FAQ

Why won't my EGO 56V battery charge in cold weather? EGO 56V Arc Lithium batteries use a BMS that locks out charging below 41°F (5°C) to prevent lithium plating — permanent cell damage that occurs when Li-ion cells accept current at low temperatures. Per the CH5500 and CH7000 manuals, the charging window is 41°F–104°F (5°C–40°C). This is normal safety behavior, not a defect.

What temperature does an EGO 56V battery need before it will charge? The CH5500 and CH7000 chargers require the battery to be at or above 41°F (5°C) before charging begins. The CH7000 will resume automatically once the pack returns above its operating floor of approximately 37°F (3°C). If starting a fresh charge after a long cold-storage period, wait until the pack is at 41°F or above.

Is it safe to leave EGO batteries outside in winter? Cold storage does not damage Li-Ion cells as long as you do not attempt to charge them while cold. For best long-term battery health, store packs at around 50% charge in a location above freezing. The CH5500 manual documents an operating range starting at 37°F (3°C), but charging requires 41°F (5°C) minimum.

My EGO CH7000 status LED is red — is the battery bad? Not necessarily. A red status LED on the CH7000 means the pack temperature is outside the normal operating range — too cold (below approximately 37°F / 3°C) or too hot (above 135°F / 57°C). Bring the battery to room temperature and the charger will resume automatically. If the red light persists at room temperature, the pack may have a cell fault.

Do all EGO 56V batteries work with all EGO chargers? Yes. All EGO Power+ 56V Arc Lithium batteries are compatible with all EGO 56V chargers — CH5500 standard, CH7000 rapid, and CH7000H high-output. EGO uses a single platform across all Power+ tools and equipment.
