Cordless Mower Battery Dies Too Fast? How to Get Your Runtime Back

Your battery mower used to finish the lawn and now it quits halfway. Here's what really eats runtime, what summer heat does to the pack, and the fixes that restore minutes.

In May the mower finished the whole yard with two bars to spare. Now it's mid-July and the pack taps out somewhere along the back fence. Before you order a replacement battery, it's worth understanding what actually eats runtime, because in most cases the battery isn't the problem at all.

Runtime is a load story

Here's the thing manufacturers don't put on the box in big letters: the advertised runtime assumes light, dry grass and a sharp blade. EGO's LM2135SP, for example, advertises about 60 minutes on its 56V 7.5Ah pack, and owners really do see numbers like that in easy conditions. Put the same mower in thick July growth, on a slope, with self-propel at full speed, and it can empty the pack in roughly half the time. Nothing is broken. The motor is simply pulling far more current with every pass. That's the lens for everything below: reduce the load, and the minutes come back.

Start with the blade, not the battery

A dull blade tears grass instead of shearing it, and tearing takes more torque, which takes more current. Blades dull gradually, so the runtime loss creeps up on you over a season and looks exactly like a fading battery. Sharpen or swap the blade every 20 to 25 hours of mowing. It's the cheapest runtime upgrade available, and when someone tells me their runtime slid slowly rather than dropping off a cliff, the blade is my first suspect every time.

Manage the grass before you blame the pack

  1. Raise the deck a notch for summer. Cutting a third of the grass height instead of half drops the load dramatically, and taller grass shades its own roots anyway.
  2. Mow dry. Wet clippings are heavy, they clump, and they drag on the blade.
  3. Ease off the self-propel. Owners report it consistently: full-speed self-propel is a real drain. Walk a little slower and the pack lasts noticeably longer.
  4. Take narrower passes through overgrown patches instead of forcing a full-width bite.
  5. Mow more often. Two easy cuts use less total charge than one brutal one, strange as that sounds.

What summer heat does to your battery

Lithium-ion cells dislike heat, and July is hard on them twice over. First, a pack that comes off the mower hot will often refuse to charge right away; most chargers pause until the cells cool down. That's a protection interlock working correctly, not a fault, the same way packs won't charge below about 32F in winter. Give it 30 minutes in the shade and try again. Second, heat ages cells permanently. A pack stored on a 100-degree garage floor all summer loses capacity it never gets back. Store batteries indoors somewhere in the 40F to 80F range and charge them at room temperature, and they'll hold their runtime for years longer.

When the pack really is worn out

Batteries do wear, so let's be fair to your mower. Most lithium-ion mower packs are designed for roughly 500 to 800 full charge cycles. If your pack is three or more seasons old and runtime has fallen off even in easy, dry grass with a fresh blade, the cells are simply aging out. A quick sanity check: charge it full, mow for five minutes, and look at the gauge. A healthy pack barely moves; a worn one visibly drops under load.

If you do replace it, stay inside your platform. A Ryobi 40V mower needs a Ryobi 40V pack, and 18V ONE+ batteries won't cross over. Milwaukee M12 and M18 don't mix either, and Makita's 18V LXT and 40V XGT lines are separate systems. Platform first, then capacity.

Buying more runtime the honest way

Sometimes the lawn just outgrew the battery. Capacity scales directly: a 7.5Ah pack holds nearly double the energy of a 4.0Ah pack on the same voltage, so runtime roughly doubles too. The catch is weight, since big packs add a couple of pounds to the mower, and cost, because a high-capacity pack can approach half the price of a whole new mower kit. Check current prices against kit deals before you commit. But if your mower is healthy and the yard is simply bigger than the pack, more amp-hours is the fix that works every single time.
