Quick answer
Buy the saw that matches your most common cut: a circular saw for straight cuts in lumber and sheet goods, a jig saw for curves, a reciprocating saw for rough cutting and demolition. Then choose the brand by the battery platform you already own, since DeWalt 20V MAX and Milwaukee M18 are separate systems. All figures below come from the manufacturers' own pages.

Circular saws
We read each manufacturer's page on 2026-10-07. Both are bare tools.
| Model | Platform | Blade | Speed | Motor | Cut and bevel | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DeWalt DCS391B | 20V MAX | 6-1/2 in | 5150 rpm | Brushed | 0 to 50 degree bevel | 7.58 lb |
| DeWalt DCS590B | 20V MAX XR | 7-1/4 in | "up to 5,500 RPM (no-load)" | Brushless | 2-9/16 in deep at 90 degrees, 2 in at 45 degrees; 57 degree bevel with stops at 45 and 22.5 degrees | 9.85 lb |
DeWalt's DCS391B page doesn't give a depth of cut in inches; the DCS590B page doesn't say whether a blade is included.
Jig saw and reciprocating saws
| Model | Platform | Speed | Stroke | Motor | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DeWalt DCS334B jig saw | 20V MAX XR | 3200 rpm (the page doesn't label strokes per minute) | Not stated | Brushless | 5.07 lb |
| Milwaukee 2719-20 Hackzall | M18 FUEL | Not stated | 7/8 in | Brushless | 4.07 lb without the battery (the page also shows 6.97 lb and 5.57 lb, which conflict) |
| DeWalt DCS369B ATOMIC | ATOMIC 20V MAX | "2,800 SPM" (spec table says 2800-rpm) | Not stated | Brushless | 3.13 lb in the overview, 3.7 lb in the spec table |
| DeWalt DCS367B | 20V MAX XR | "up to 2,900 SPM" | 1-1/8 in | Brushless | 5 lb in the features, 5.4 lb in the spec table |
Where a page contradicts itself, we show both figures. The Hackzall's description on Amazon cites the -21 kit and a 5.0Ah battery; the listing we checked is the bare tool.
How to choose
- First saw for most homeowners: the one for the job you do most. Straight cuts in lumber point to a circular saw, and curves or cut-outs to a jig saw.
- Circular saw size: a 6-1/2 inch saw is lighter; the 7-1/4 inch DCS590B lists its cut depths and a brushless motor but weighs 9.85 lb on DeWalt's page.
- Reciprocating saws: the ATOMIC DCS369B is the lightest figure listed here, at around 3 lb, but its page gives two weights. The Milwaukee Hackzall lists a 7/8 inch stroke and the DCS367B a 1-1/8 inch stroke.
- Platform: compare with what you already own using our battery compatibility checker.
An unfamiliar-brand listing
A SEESII reciprocating saw listing shows a 15 mm stroke, 200W and "3500 RPM", with two 4.0Ah batteries and six blades. A reciprocating saw's speed is normally given in strokes per minute, the listing doesn't state its voltage, and it doesn't say which batteries it uses. We haven't tested it and aren't recommending it.

FAQ
Which saw should a beginner buy first?
The one that matches the cut you make most often. A circular saw does straight cuts, a jig saw does curves, and a reciprocating saw does rough cutting.
Is the DeWalt DCS590B better than the DCS391B?
They are different sizes: 6-1/2 inch brushed against 7-1/4 inch brushless, and 7.58 lb against 9.85 lb on DeWalt's pages. Which is better depends on the work.
Do DeWalt and Milwaukee saws share batteries?
No. DeWalt 20V MAX and Milwaukee M18 are separate platforms.
